Snake In The Grass

I was out fishing with my boys today when we encountered some enexpected excitement. We were following a narrow foot trail through grass and brush as we walked between ponds. I was following the boys along the trail when I noticed a large snake in the grass just next to the trail we were on. Since I am not much of a snake fan I asked my boys what kind of snake it was. I guess the snake heard the question too because it answered with a shake and rattle of its’ tail. Needless to say we left the snake alone and continued along - though we did watch our step a bit more closely for the rest of the day.

My daughter (the walking animal encyclopedia) later explained that rattlesnakes, as well as the similarly marked bull snakes, like to lie in wait alongside trails to await any small animals that may happen along the trail. Her commentary left me reflecting on a spiritual parallel.

Our adversary, that ancient serpent, also likes to lie in wait along our path. The serpent is happy to bite, poison and devour those who are weak or who wander off the straight and narrow path our Lord laid out for us. It takes wisdom, discernment and alertness to detect the hidden traps. Often, like with my chance rattlesnake encounter, a successful pilgrimage requires that we journey together in fellowship.
