One positive alternative for your family Christmas celebration is to try a home-made Christmas celebration. In recent posts I have discussed how commercial Christmas has become with some ideas on how to rediscover Christmas in a fresh way. I think this is a positive option and one that my wife and I will be implementing next Christmas.
The idea of a home-made Christmas celebration is simple. Rather than purchasing gifts for everyone on your list you make the gifts yourself. The only limits are those you choose.
God has given each of us the ability to be creative - it is part of being made in the image of a creator God. We have a God-given desire to create something. Even those who claim they are not creative can come up with some ideas if they work at it. The important thing is to have fun with this. Celebrating a homemade Christmas means you are invested in the gifts you give.
If your family decides to celebrate Christmas homemade-style for more than one year you could implement a theme for each year. For instance, the theme one year could be early Americana; the theme the second year could be southwestern. Another option would be to theme your Christmas gifts around a specific cultural group and adopt a mission that works with that group.
Celebrating a homemade Christmas provides an opportunity to share gifts with those you love while investing a bit of yourself. This can also provide an opportunity to step back from some of the busyness and reflect on Christmas being a time to give of ourselves.
