Merton On Praying Through Distractions

“Prayer and love are really learned in the hour when prayer becomes impossible and your heart turns to stone.”

“If you have never had any distractions you don’t know how to pray. For the secret of prayer is a hunger for God and for the vision of God, a hunger that lies far deeper than the level of language or affection.” (Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation)

Merton makes an interesting observation about prayer. Those of us who live in an instant world find it far too easy to quit when we do not instantly get the results we want. The same applies to prayer. It is far too easy to quit trying when we find out that it is hard work.

Jesus taught that if we persist in prayer the Father would answer. But we need to have the faith to be persistent.
