Buy Nothing Day - A Holiday We Can All Live With

November 24 is Buy Nothing Day according to a press release issued by Adbusters Media Foundation (November 25 for those outside of North America). People in 65 countries around the world are boycotting the start-of-Christmas-season shopping today with many participating in rallys and events. Participants see it as a way to make a statement about consumerism, materialism and the overall unsustainability of our overconsuming lifestyle.
The best part of this event is that everyone can participate. To quote the Adbusters press release headline, “November 24 is Buy Nothing Day - No Purchase Necessary.”

Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, Canada. 2006 marks the 14th annual Buy Nothing Day. Kalle Lasn, co-founder of Adbusters Media Foundation, puts it this way, “Our headlong plunge into ecological collapse requires a profound shift in the way we see things. Driving hybrid cars and limiting industrial emissions is great, but they are band-aid solutions if we don’t address the core problem: we have to consume less. This is the message of Buy Nothing Day.”

I suspect Buy Nothing Day is a holiday we could all learn to live with!
