How do we begin to give thanks to Yahweh who has walked beside us each step of our journey during the past year? Does a prayer offered before a midday feast cover it? How about attending a church service on or around Thanksgiving?
I don’t know what the answer is but it seems like a heart of gratitude should be evident all year long. I suspect for most of us we are too busy with family and friends on Thankgiving to truly give the thanks to God that are due. (I’ve noticed a rather similar problem around Christmas but I’ll save that for another article!)
My concern is with giving lip service to thanks giving. It seems that perhaps a true heart of gratitude should take us a little further many Christians go. If our idea of giving thanks is limited to what we say then perhaps giving thanks is not enough. We might find ourselves being like the self-deluded individual talked about in the book of James who forgets that genuine faith involved works. It is God who said, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” Showing mercy requires action on our part - not just talk.
I would love some comments on ways we can genuinely give thanks to God on Thanksgiving.
