Do We Rejoice Over Saddam Hussein’s Execution

Saddam Hussein has been found guilty by an Iraqi court and sentenced to be executed by hanging. I suspect many people in the west are rather glad to see the end nearing for this wicked man. Saddam Hussein deserves to be executed by his own people for horrible crimes he committed against them. Hussein is reaping that which he has sown during his dictatorship. As Jesus said, “for all those who take the sword will die by the sword” (Matthew 26.52 WEB).

I wonder how many Christians find themselves rejoicing at Hussein’s downfall.

The Scriptures caution us about rejoicing over the downfall of our enemies:

“Don’t rejoice when your enemy falls. Don’t let your heart be glad when he is overthrown; lest Yahweh see it, and it displeases him, and he turn away his wrath from him.” (Proverbs 24.17-18 WEB)

There is a sinful reaction in most of us that enjoys seeing our enemies fall. The Scriptures warn us that such a reaction will be seen by Yahweh God. Further, the Scriptures suggest the possibility that God may actually withhold his planned judgment against someone simply because we are rejoicing over it.

If we in the West rejoice over Saddam Hussein’s conviction and pending execution God may spare him because of our reaction. Something to think about…
