Refreshing Rain

“Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning.” - Saying of the Desert Fathers

Recently I sat outside under a canopy listening to a light late-summer rain falling. I took a deep, slow breath. And then I took another. The air had a clean, fresh quality that was refreshing to body and soul. I could not help reflecting on the spiritual parallel. Later that evening I was reading an article and was delighted to find the above quote from the desert fathers.
We all have need of similarly refreshing spiritual experiences. We need to be washed clean. But, of course, water does not provide spiritual cleansing (though water is frequently used for a comparative analogy in Scripture). “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1.9 WEB)
